Before Zak Basch became the coordinator of public relations and baseball operations for the River Cats, he pitched in the A's minor league system.

And before his professional career, Basch was one of hundreds of collegians playing summer ball in the amateur Alaska League.

"I got off the plane to join the Alaska (Fairbanks) Goldpanners in 2001 and said to myself, 'Where the hell am I?' " recalled Basch, 31.
